Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100g) brown sugar
- 1 cup (90g) rolled oats
- ¾ cup (170g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3 cups (about 3 medium) apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter to cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Take about two-thirds of the crumble mixture and press it firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Set the rest aside for the topping.
- In a bowl, toss the apple slices with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and cornstarch until evenly coated.
- Spread the apple mixture over the crust in an even layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumble mixture over the apples, pressing gently to adhere.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender. Let cool completely in the pan before slicing.
Notes
Keep the butter cold for a crumbly texture. Let the bars cool fully before slicing to ensure they firm up properly. For a nutty twist, add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping.
