Description
Flaky puff pastry wrapped around savory ham and melted cheese, these pinwheels are perfect for parties, snacks, or quick lunches.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry, pre-rolled and chilled
- 6–8 slices deli ham (e.g., honey ham, smoked ham, or Black Forest ham)
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or 6–8 slices of cheese)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water for egg wash
- Optional: Dried herbs like thyme or oregano for extra flavor
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- If frozen, let the puff pastry thaw until pliable but still cold. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface if needed.
- Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the pastry (optional). Lay slices of ham evenly across the surface, then sprinkle or layer the cheese on top.
- Starting from one edge, roll the pastry into a tight log. Use gentle but firm pressure to keep the roll even.
- Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the roll into 1-inch (2.5 cm) rounds. You should get about 12-14 pinwheels.
- Place the pinwheels flat on the parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of space between them.
- Brush the tops and sides of each pinwheel with the egg wash.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the pinwheels are puffed and golden brown. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For extra crispiness, bake the pinwheels on an oven-safe wire rack instead of directly on the baking sheet. Avoid overfilling with cheese to prevent excessive oozing during baking.
