Description
This homemade pumpkin spice bitters recipe is perfect for elevating your fall cocktails with warm, spiced flavors like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 5 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon allspice berries
- 5 cardamom pods
- 1 tablespoon fresh orange peel
- 2 star anise
- 1 cup vodka or high-proof alcohol
Instructions
- Using a mortar and pestle, gently crush the cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, cloves, allspice berries, cardamom pods, and star anise to release their oils.
- Place the crushed spices into a clean glass jar along with the pumpkin puree and orange peel.
- Pour vodka or high-proof alcohol over the ingredients until they are fully submerged. Seal the jar tightly and give it a gentle shake.
- Let the mixture steep for 5-7 days in a cool, dark place, shaking the jar once a day to ensure even infusion.
- After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Discard the solids.
- Use a funnel to transfer the strained bitters into small bottles for storage. Seal the bottles tightly.
- Store the bitters in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months. Shake well before using.
Notes
Balance the spices carefully to avoid overpowering flavors. Use high-quality alcohol for better results, and allow the bitters to age for deeper flavors.
